Treasures of the Season

December 16th, 2010

Here in Wisconsin it’s been cold. So far our December temperatures have been well below average for this time of year. It makes going out and shooting nature photos a chilly challenge, but it also provides opportunities to photograph things that only happen as the temps drop.

When theĀ  temperature drops into the single digits, magical things start to happen on the north facing windows of the house. Ice formations begin growing into beautiful mosaics and abstracts. You never know how the ice will form or the shapes it will take. Every day is full of new surprises.

Earlier this week we had overnight temps near zero and daytime highs in the low teens, this is perfect ice forming weather. Up until yesterday afternoon our kitchen windows have been a photographers delight. This lovely ice tree showed on up on Tuesday morning. By Wednesday morning it became embedded in a larger formation and Wednesday night it was all gone, melted away by warmer temps. The ice should return in a couple of days as the temps dip down again and new wonders will appear on our kitchen windows. As always, my camera will be ready.

Two Years Ago Today

December 3rd, 2010

As I sit here this morning waiting for the first winter storm of the 2010 winter to begin, I can’t help but think back to two years ago today. It was snowing that day and I decided to drive out to Petrifying Springs Park here in Kenosha. What I found there was a wonderland of winter beauty. The trees were covered with a light frosting of snow, the Pike River was perfectly still and the reflections were amazing.

On that day I shot many beautiful images, but this one was my favorite. In fact, I consider it one of my top images of all time.

When I look at this image now, the feelings of awe and peacefulness that I had on that day come rushing back to me. It was a very magical day.

Photo of the Month for December 2010

December’s Photo of the Month: Ice Formation on Kitchen Window, Kenosha WI

When the temperature outside drops into the single digits, magical things can happen on the north facing windows of your house. December’s photo of the month is a perfect example of that. This beautiful ice landscape formed overnight on December 12, 2008. While I’ve seen many beautiful ice formations on windows, I had never seen anything like this. It’s a perfect winter landscape. The coolest thing is that it’s never happened again, so this is a one of a kind image.

I recently started playing around with this image in Lightroom and Photoshop. The original image is pretty, but it’s very gray and colorless. By changing the color of the image into blueish tones, the coldness and wintry feeling come out much better. I also decided that this would make a great holiday greeting to all my online friends. So Happy Holidays to everyone out there. I hope your holidays are filled with the same joy and magic that was created on my kitchen window the morning this image was taken.
