Last week I put up a post about fall color reports for California’s Sierra Nevada, this week I’m giving my first report on fall colors here in the Midwest, focusing mainly on Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.
From what I’m seeing online it looks like the the northern parts of all three states are good for this weekend, with Central to Northern Minnesota being the best with much of the area at 75-100% of peak color.
North-West Wisconsin also looks good with 9 counties reporting 75-100%. The rest of Northern Wisconsin and parts of Central WI are showing 50-75%.
Michigan appears to be the slowest right now. The UP is reporting less than 50% peak. There are areas in the Eastern UP that are reporting good color though. These include the Tahquamenon Falls area in Chippewa County and the drive between Escanaba and Iron Mountain along US-2. We will be heading to Michigan for vacation next week, with plans to shoot fall colors, so I’m hoping things pick up in the UP.
That’s all for now. As more reports come in I’ll post them.

In many parts of the country, fall is all about the colorful leaves. Where I originally come from in Eastern California, photographers from around the country flock in to shoot the beautiful autumn aspens in the mountains. Here in the Midwest it’s a little different though. Once September rolls around, harvest festivals begin to pop up everywhere. Whether it’s a pumpkin farm or an apple orchard, you can bet it will be filled with folks enjoying the wonders of the fall harvest.
Now don’t get me wrong, the trees in Wisconsin are some of the most beautiful that fall has to offer and I love taking pictures of them, but this year I’ve also discovered that there are other fall beauties just waiting for their pictures to be taken; colorful pumpkins, gourds, corn, apples and so much more.
Last weekend we went out to a pumpkin farm and wandered
around photographing the great sights. It’s fun challenging yourself to photograph things that you’ve never photographed before, to go outside of your comfort zone and test your creative instincts in new ways. I had never shot pumpkins or corn before, but just like many of the photography challenges I gave myself this summer, I had a blast shooting these things. I found many great compositions sitting right there for the taking and I even found myself moving things around to create an image that wasn’t there before.
Over the summer I grew as a photographer and my photography went in directions I never dreamed it would go. I’ve been wondering how this growth would affect my fall photography. I’m already beginning to see the effects of that growth in the photos I took over the weekend.
Fall photography has begun, and this year, it’s not just about the leaves.

This rose goes out to my dad. It was four years ago today that we lost him. He dearly loved his roses and in the spring and summer the house would be filled with their beauty.

I love you and miss you dad.

Since I no longer live in California, it’s kind of hard for me to give fall color reports for the Eastern Sierra. The last couple of years I’ve tried to keep up with it, but it’s kind of hard posting info from other sources, especially when I’m focusing on fall colors here in Wisconsin.
Thankfully, many folks have picked up where I left off and there are now many great resources for fall color reports from the Sierra Nevada.
Here’s a listing of some of the better sources:
I hope this list is useful to everyone. The Eastern Sierra is one of the best places for fall color in California. If you know of other sites the give up to date reports on fall colors in the Sierra Nevada, please leave a link in the comment. Happy autumn everyone!
