A Photoshop Challenge from Mom

June 21st, 2010

The other week I was showing my mom some pictures I had taken last year of the Blue Angels at the Southern Wisconsin AirFest. When we got to this image I commented that I really liked it, but wished that the lower jets had some space in between them. My mom, having seen work I’ve done in the past with Photoshop, immediately replied, “Well can’t you just move them apart?”.

Now don’t think that I hadn’t thought of that before, I had, but for some reason I never played around with the idea. Now I had a reason, a challenge from my mom.

So a few days ago I sat down and began working on separating the two jets. To tell the truth, it really wasn’t all that hard. Photoshop CS5′s new Content Aware feature made filling in the sky a snap, and the powerful new selection tools made moving the jet on the right and blending it in pretty simple. The hardest part was getting the nose of the left jet to look good. Since it blends in so well with the tail, it was difficult to get a good selection on it. After working on the image for about an hour I had this finished picture.

My mom has yet to see it since she’s now back in California. I think I’ll make a couple of prints and mail them to her though. After all, she inspired me to do it.

Swallowtail Butterfly

June 20th, 2010

This beautiful swallowtail butterfly was photographed at the Cox Arboretum in Dayton, OH. My wife Lynne spotted it flying around a bush getting nectar from the flowers that were in bloom. She called my attention to it and the dance began.

It stayed on that bush for a good 5-10 minutes, flying from flower to flower, settling on one for a few seconds, and then flying to the next. All the while I was moving with it getting many great images with it’s wings closed and open.

Getting good images of butterflies can be quite a challenge. I’m not content with just shooting closeups of the butterfly, I like to compose an image that shows it in it’s natural surrounding living it’s life. That sometime requires quick thinking and visualizing in order to get good compositions.

I’m really happy with how this image came out.

June Photo of the Month: Sturgeon Bay, Lake Michigan WI

This month’s photo was taken in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin on June 13, 2009, the day Lynne and I got married. There’s really not much else to say about it, other than it’s a very special photo to us, from a very special place.
