St. Mary’s Church, Port Washington WI

The Lake Michigan fishing village of Port Washington is one of my favorite towns in Wisconsin. It has a wonderful harbor and downtown area and holds many festivals there throughout the summer.  Sitting on top of a hill, overlooking downtown Port Washington, is St Mary’s Catholic Church. This beautiful church was built in 1882 by Luxembourg emigrants.

On our first trip to Port Washington, we drove up to the church to photograph it. I took this picture at the time. I never really cared for the color version of this image, so I decided to try it as a black and white, I still didn’t care for it. Then I decided to try sepia and there was the look I wanted. I feel the sepia image captures the beauty and feeling of the church, it seems to radiate an aura that the color and BW image just didn’t have.

Stormy Clouds Over Kenosha Harbor

As you’re driving along the shore of Lake Michigan just north of Kenosha WI, you come upon this cool view of the harbor area to the south. I’ve loved this view since the first time I saw it.

On this day it was quite beautiful with the stormy clouds flying in the air and the play of light and shadows on the water. I didn’t even notice this shot at first. There were five kite boarders on the lake and I was photographing them. I happen to look to my right just in time to catch this image. Luckily I had just changed from my telephoto lens to a wider angle one when I saw it.

I guess the lesson learned is to always have your head on swivel and be looking all around. If I had stayed focused on closeups of the kite boarders I most would most likely have missed this beautiful scene off in the distance.

Lilies from Wegerzyn Gardens

Near downtown Dayton OH, on the banks of the Stillwater River, is a beautiful park named Wegerzyn Gardens. It’s one of Dayton’s Metro Parks and is a wonderful place for a photographer to roam around.

Lynne and I visited Wegerzyn Gardens on our recent trip to Dayton. We spent a couple hours wandering it’s paths, photographing Hibiskus, Water Lilies, dragonflies and much more.

I came upon this beautiful group of lilies back in a corner of the main garden. There were a dozen flowers in bloom in this spot, but for this image I chose to zoom in on these five and simplify the composition.

I then did some work in post processing to get this final image of these beautiful flowers.
